Jackie Masters outside North Cray Centre
Jackie Masters, winner of the 2011 Staff Recognition Awards for Excellence

Winner: Jackie Masters

Jackie is a Health Visitor in Bexley Community Health Services. She was nominated by a parent who wanted to recognise “the dedication and professionalism she has shown to our family for the last 4 years.” Jackie has supported them to deal with various health issues that their youngest daughter has encountered including severe colic, feeding problems, bronchiolitis, severe reflux and vision problems. Jackie researched each of the problems and ensured that the family got the correct support from a range of services.

The mum who nominated Jackie said about her:

“She realised very early on that I was struggling with the demands of a ‘demanding’ baby and quickly put support in place to help me.”

“Jackie has consistently given us an exceptional standard of care and support, as a whole family, demonstrating professionalism and dedication at all times.”

“Our daughter is now a confident, happy, cheeky little girl about to start reception and I know that much of this is due to the support, help and encouragement we received from Jackie.”

“We believe Jackie has truly gone over and above the call of duty and we will never be able to thank her enough!”

Highly commended: Marlene Corke

Marlene coordinates the therapeutic working day initiative which she helped develop at Danson Clinic at the Bracton Centre, our medium secure mental health unit. She was nominated by several colleagues and a service user. A Consultant Psychiatrist at the units said of Marlene: “She is an outstanding professional who contributes hugely to the welfare and safety and patients…the way in which she delivers a service literally transforms the experience of the residents here.”

“She makes life meaningful for our inpatients, some of whom stay for several years and have no contact with family outside.”

“Her professional demeanour and ‘can do’ attitude have, without a doubt, reduced the risk of violence on the clinic. Patients know that when Marlene makes a promise, she will deliver on it.”

Marlene is heavily involved in the innovative Greenwich Market project, helping service users produce artistic and creative items which they sell on a monthly stall at the market. She leads several successful activity based groups on the unit and also supports residents to lead groups themselves.

“Marlene is reliable, responsible, committed and dedicated to working with service users in breaking down social barriers, enabling them to have a better quality of life.”

The service user said: “Marlene not only does a good job, but she cares. I think Marlene is universally admired and appreciated across the Bracton by staff and users alike and I feel privileged to have known her…I regard Marlene as a friend and will miss her when I move on.”

Lyndhurst District Nursing Team at IndigO2
The District Nursing Team based at Lyndhurst Medical Centre received the commended award for Excellence

Commended: District Nursing Team, Lyndhurst Medical Centre

The District Nursing Team at Lyndhurst Medical Centre were nominated by a member of staff based in Greenwich for the care they gave to her mother and stepfather over a six year period. “At all times I found the nurses to be cheerful, professional, dedicated, caring, compassionate and supportive both to my elderly parents and the family at large.”

“Last October it became clear that my mother was in the final stages of terminal lung cancer and, although they were very stretched in terms of staffing, the Lyndhurst nurses provided outstanding care three times a day with additional support from the Twilight Service. As soon as the gravity of my mother’s condition was apparent, the Lyndhurst nurses swung into action, increasing their input to meet my mother’s needs, organising the delivery of equipment and medication to ensure that my dear mum could have her wish to remain within her own home in comfort, dignity and with well managed pain relief.”

“Despite the diabolical weather conditions which prevailed during the last weeks of mum’s life, the Lyndhurst nurses never let us down. On one occasion Janice Dowling was unable to get her car out because of the snow, so she rang the central district nursing team office and offered to cover the work of a nurse in that team who was unable to get to work. Janice then walked three miles through snow to visit and provide care for my mother in Barnehurst.”

“The contribution the Lyndhurst nurses made to the quality of life enjoyed by my mother and stepfather over the years and in the time leading up to their deaths cannot be overstated. In all that they do the Lyndhurst District Nursing Team is a leading example of the nursing profession at its best.”
