Equality impact assessments

An Equality Impact Assessment (EIA, or sometimes referred to as EQIA) is an assessment of the impact of a policy, service or function on different communities and groups.  Equality impact assessments ask service providers, policy makers and commissioners to consider what impact a given policy, strategy or service may have on:

  • Gender
  • Sexual Orientation
  • Race or Ethnicity
  • Faith or Belief
  • Age
  • Disability
  • Human rights

The conclusions of an Equality Impact Assessment are used to improve services; for example, by improving access, making referral forms more inclusive and increasing cultural competency.

A training package, presentation and workshop have been developed to support teams in the process of equality impact assessing their services. A toolkit, with acompanying  training is provided for staff involved in writing and reviewing strategies and policies.
